A great gift for all uni graduates

January/February is the time when final year students at universities start to seriously think about what to do when they’re “out”. It used to be so much more relaxed, but for the past couple of years the best grad schemes and interships have had very strict application deadlines early in the year. Which means right now is the time to sit down and figure out what’s next, in the “real world”. I’d say if you have a friend or a relative who is about to graduate, this book can do a lot of good. I read Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg in 2013, a few weeks after it came out. I was just starting out in Marketing , and I needed something to reassure me that I didn’t have to get it right from Day 1 (the pressure many of us felt). And it’s not just the lives of a few lucky readers this book has had impact on. Three years in, and there’s a global movement that changes company policies and inspires lawmakers across the …

The perfect Christmas present for “night owls”

Ironically, this ingenious invention was recommended to me by my ex-boss, who was struggling to wake up early as much as I did. It’s the most horrible feeling in the world when your alarm goes off at 6 something in the morning (7 on a lucky day!) and it looks like it’s the middle of the night. I remember those dreadful mornings when the alarm would go off, I would frantically try to find my mobile with eyes still closed and then get up 10 minutes later hitting something (typically a corner table, followed by a lot of cursing) on my way to the bathroom. 6:15am and the day is already crap. Sounds familiar? For those people who do get gloomier in winter months when days are short, Lumie has developed a rather simple way of naturally waking people up – a Bodyclock. It works like this: you set up an alarm for the time you need to be awake (say 6:30am, hello gym bunnies and commuters!), and this cute little machine starts to slowly …

Marrakesh: the city where you can find green lipsticks and befriend a pet turtle

Marrakesh is one of those unique southern cities that combine a complete lack of order with such inspiring serenity, that it may just take you forever to figure it out. After spending five days there, I can honestly say – I’ve barely scratched the surface of its cultural richness. In this post, I’ll attempt to remove some of the illusions you may have about the city and replace them with my own personal discoveries. Many people associate Marrakesh with cheap shopping. The famous souks in Northern Medina cater for tourists, and shop owners are more than happy to sell you inexpensive leather accessories, jewellery, national garments and spices. However, don’t expect anything “artisanal” – pretty much every stall sells similar things (my guess is that somewhere outside Medina there is a large warehouse, distributing “touristy” souvenirs to local sellers), so if you really like a particular item, it’s worth shopping around and bargaining hard (you can easily knock off 50% or more, as sellers deliberately set initial prices higher). I am terrible at haggling, so …

Three easy (really!) ways to impress your girlfriend this Valentine’s

Valentine’s Day is synonymous with over-the-top flower bouquets, heart-shaped chocolates and lush romantic getaways. As a result, over the years I’ve received some seriously ludicrous gifts from boyfriends. They seemed under so much pressure to “impress”, that the whole romance thing was totally forgotten. I suggest you guys take a step back and think about what every girl is really looking for. I’ll generalise a bit here, but more than anything else we want to feel like you truly care about us. That’s it! It then becomes pretty obvious, that a 100-rose bouquet is not as “caring” as it may seem at first (she doesn’t even have a vase THAT big!) and huge boxes of Cadbury’s chocolates will most likely cause her to overeat and to “feel fat”. Here are a few simple recommendations that are guaranteed to work. As it’s already Thursday, I’ve picked ideas that you can easily find/organise at short notice. Small beauty/make-up gifts Boys are never really interested in our make-up habits, so receiving something beauty-related from a boyfriend would be …
